Will You Be The One?

Willie Torres Jr. wrote a blog “Be the one.” That phrase has been a part of my life since I spent a week with Al Denson (another bunch of fun stories) after he wrote the song “Be The One” and put out a video that I used quite a bit in mentoring leadership teens in Youth For Christ. That was 44 years ago. I still play and sing it from my own keyboard.

Yes, the video is a bit outdated in hairstyles and clothes, but not much else. The message could not be timelier. This well-done video is very much worth watching and the music worth listening to. Thanks, Al, for all the work you put into this as well as a great career and legacy.

  4. Powerfully put together, the video and the song! Praise be to God! I can see why you chose to use it in your youth ministry. Young or old, it’s not an easy world. May the choices we make be, by His power, to His glory!

  6. Powerful song and lyrics Gary. Thank you. I wish every young person today in this world with problems exponential to what we struggled with growing up could see this, pray and and seek how they could “Be the One”

      The challenge to bring our youth into this kind of leadership is ever before us, always the next generation. Enter into the battle knowing only Jesus changes lives through surrendered people.

  7. I have never heard that song before Gary. Love the song (found it on Apple Music and downloaded it) and the video. Did we really look like that 44 years ago?

    Our daughter spent four years with Youth for Christ here in the UK. Two years as a volunteer and two on staff. They are still doing good work here.

    1. Ha, ya. I was thinner and had longer hair…actually had hair on top. You know a lot about YFC then with your daughter. Great organization with a lot of great people with vision and energy.

      Al had the ability to connect with students with his speaking, music and humor. He could get a crowd wound up with just his keyboard solo. The last time we spoke was 30 years ago. He was the opening act for Petra at the time. I used that song and video teen leadership retreats, developing teen to teen ministry.

      1. I have heard of Petra. I had a couple of tape cassettes of theirs years ago and managed to get those albums via Apple Music too.

        Our daughter Beth was involved with a YFC touring team called Nomad – going around the UK in a van with a steel cage in which they played two-aside football (soccer). They went into schools, youth clubs, churches, etc. It was an excellent ministry. Beth was team member for two years, then team leader for a year before it got pulled (I don’t think YFC could afford to replace the van).

        Beth then spent a year leading a new touring team that had external funding – a multi-media indoor thing called the Cube. She gave it a year but it wasn’t her. Beth was sporty not arty. I guess that even in a multi media age the sport got the attention of young people, whereas the Cube didn’t have the same appeal.

  8. Nomad…that would have been a great ministry as well as a fun time. Petra was a favorite group of mine…heavy music but the musicians had a lot of depth and great testimonies as people. extremely talented. I had No eardrums left after a concert though.

  9. Gary, this song brings back many memories for me. I was in college and loved that song so much. How wonderful that you spent time with Al Denson. I can hear you singing this song! And this message is very timely today just as then. God bless you for sharing this!
